Games don't get much tighter than this! Port lost the toss and were asked to bat on a hard wicket. Boo Boo Bonnett looking out of touch, having not played for a few weeks, was caught behind for 6, shortly followed by greasy Italian, 'Macaroni' Bray for 19. JJ Walker joined Matt Stokeld and the pair put on 41 brisk runs before the Irishman's lucky charms ran out and he pulled straight to mid-wicket, bringing in chatty South African, Cif Carvelly. You couldn't get a word in edgeways as he and The Duke smashed the ball to all parts in an 81 run, 9 over partnership. Cif was caught going for another maximum and from here the innings began to falter. The run rate was over 7, but the wickets were running low and once The Duke went for 75 from just 50 balls, including 10 fours and 3 sixes, only Adam Young offered any form of rearguard action carrying his bat as The Wrist was the last wicket to fall with 7.3 overs unused.

In reply Barripper got off to a great start with David Trestrail in fine form. He, and his sister Simon Trestrail put on 117 for the first wicket, beating off Young, Stokeld and then JJ before Carvelly removed his white hat and took Simon's middle wicket clean out. It was a fiery spell from Carvelly, hitting the batsmen 3 times in one over, including one that smacked him on his helmet! Bowling unchanged for 10 overs, Carvelly then removed Laity, Bray taking him from behind. Darren 'Torrance' Parish came into the attack and he and The Duke bowled to the finish. In the 40th over, after some tight bowling, the turning point arrived when Parish bowled Trestrail for 144, his innings included 16 fours and 9 sixes. The pressure was on Barripper for the first time in their reply, and Port's tails were well and truly up as wickets begin to tumble. Parish then bowled Williams and had Hollow caught by JJ at cover. By now the runs had dried up and Barripper crumbled. Colin Trestrail was next to go, caught at gully by Paul 'Lardy' Combellack and when Wright edged Parish to Bray, the cannelloni keeper palming the ball to Bonnett at slip, Port knew it was in the bag. The Duke kept firing in the short balls and with 7 required from the last over the trisexual paceman put in a fast and accurate final burst, bowling Nibbs and leaving the visitors 3 runs short, after at one point needing just 78 from the last 22 overs with 9 wickets in tact. A great fightback by Port that showed great character and a never say die attitude, ensuring a growing lead at the top of the table.
