On paper this looked to be an easy task, but games aren't played on paper and this was no easy task, but determination from a gritty Australian saw Port home in a tense finish. Batting first St Ives struggled to get to grips with Carvelly's length and Young's line, although boundaries were flying off the edges and racing away on the parched outfield. The chattering South African struck first, Brown fingering one behind to Bray for just 8, but no further wickets were added until Parish and Walker were brought on. Hudson drove Parish, the edge evading the slips but flying straight to Paddy Gardner, sporting his Peter Morris beard at third man, another fine catch from the birthday boy! Skipper Dave Phillips was to have an eventful day, surving numerous chances as he seemed to do his best to keep the ball in the air, Kebab Richards missing a difficult chance at second slip, but Parish was to get rid of his man shortly after - for a while at least! Phillips ducked into a short ball and was hit on the head, dazed and with a growing bulge he left the field, Nicholls the next victim - but LBW to Walker this time! JJ had been unlucky not to remove Phillips with a great LBW shout, and this seemed to prey on the umpires mind as he raised his finger, the scuffling Irishman getting reward for his accurate spell. Ward was next to go - attempting to leave one from Parish but the ball cut back, hit the shoulder of the bat, Pastafarian Bray making no mistake. K Nicholls was next to go, Parish removing his middle stump and things looking good for Port - 83 for 5. Phillips now returned, this time displaying his helmet. Edgy at first, still feeling the effects of his injury he struggled to cope, edging behind off Walker, the Irish raiders lucky charms deserting him as Bray failed to take the chance. Peters had joined Phillips and he too seemed in all sorts of problems early doors as Walker continually beat him, but still the chances weren't taken. With Parish and Walker completing their spells, Young and Carvelly returned. St Ives run rate was very slow, but wickets were still in hand. It all appeared to go wrong for Port in the field as run out chances were missed and mistakes seemed to let every ball through for a boundary, Young being the main one to suffer although his luck eventually changed when he bowled Phillips at long last for 54. Carvelly even managed to have a roll in the dust after one delivery, leaving his normally whitest of whites a rather feltching shade of brown. Peters was somehow still there, having never looked comfortable, but when he did manage to lay bat to ball another error seemed to gift him more runs and he took his side to 174-6 when the overs were completed. Not a huge score in normal circumstances, but after last weeks reverse it was time to exorcise some demons. Bonnett and Bray looked totally comfortable with the Italian punishing anything short, racing to 38 from just 26 balls before Peters went round the wicket and got one to hold its line, 62-1 in the 11th over. JJ came in and went out - trying to take the attack apart but getting height not distance for his first duck of the season. Carvelly was soon to follow with the score on just 71, failing to light the fires for a change. Paddy Gardner joined Boo, steadying the ship as the runs began to flow again. Then disaster struck - Gardner, with an eye on his jelly and ice cream and pass the parcel was bowled by Peters and again the runs dried up. Young took 12 balls to get off the mark and Boo went through a quiet spell as consolidation was the best chance, but with Boo on 33 from 68 balls he gave a chance and it was caught - 108 for 5 in the 28th over. Parish joined Young and the partnership started to tick, but after driving Brown for 4, next ball Parish presented a simple chance to mid on and departed for just 14 to bring in Kebab Richards with the score now 129. 15 runs later he too was to fall leaving batchelor Jamie Salter and his blistered palm to join Young. It was to prove the match winning partnership and Slater supported the Australian and they worked the singles, putting the pressure back on St Ives. Young made his highest score of the season, off 68 balls as the pair wrapped up the win, Young fittingly hitting the winning boundary with a glorious on-drive to pick up the Tesco blue and white stripe value squash man of the match award!
