Another warm day saw 'The Roasters' head west to St Levan. With England kicking off at 4 all efforts were on an early finish, but it didn't come as prematurely as hoped although I think both were satisfied in the end. Williams and Thomas took an aggressive early approach, Thomas in particular taking a dislike to the Port team talk, and then any field alterations! Their strategy seemed to be hit as hard as you can and just hope! It worked for a while, Stokeld edged through slip and over point before sun-loving strawberry picker, Adam Young had Thomas well held at 1st slip by Boo Boo Bonnett with the score on 30. Angove came in with the same approach but Young knocked his off stump over after he'd stroked 18 and started to look dangerous. Normally quiet Teeside Triathlete Stokeld even got in on the verbals, enquiring how Williams could play the same shot so late, so many times without connecting! With the sun baking down it was left to 'Chattering' Cif Carvelly and 'Jovial' Jonny Walker to take centre stage. Never one to shy from the action, Carvelly had Thomas caught behind before Walker's nagging length proved too much for the Levan batsman as he continually probed away before bowling Payne and Barrett for ducks and then enticing opener Williams, who's patient innings was ended, playing on for 34. Skipper, Tim Nicholas tried to take the attack to Port, going after Carvelly, but the pacey Protea was having none of it, rattling his sticks and sending him on his way before repeating the dose to Chappell, and innings closed. In reply Dean Bray appeared keen to impress his watching 'friend' with his 'strokeplay'. A top edge to the keeper was not the plan, but it did give the romancing Italian time to spend with 'the family'! In-form Matt 'Plug' Stokeld came in, and 9 balls later, left without troubling the scorer, and I think there were a few that would've liked to have done that! Bonnett was the next to leave, victim of a 'pie-chucker'! Boo tried to pull, but it was not to be as the ball never got up and trapped him in front, lbw for 24. Next to go was Irish raider, JJ Walker for a 6 ball 12! No doubt in a hurry to see England lose, but it was Port who were struggling now on 50-4. Carvelly smashed 87 in the home fixture and was keen to carry on where he left off, hitting 5 fours in his 13 ball 25, before 'Champagne' Paddy Gardner showed his class. The silky, bearded left-hander confidently seeing his side home, ably supported by Doyle Lee after just 17.2 overs. Students and beards.....what's all that about!? Stithians are the visitors next weekend, when hopefully a not too hung-over post-Meadery squad will try and maintain their position at the top of Division 4
