Bank Holiday Monday saw the troops roll into Mawnan facing a difficult task on paper, but an easy win was wrapped up thanks in the main to some explosive batting from lippy South African Cif Carvelly. Porthleven made a steady start on a wet wicket, but with the score on 35 lost Boo Boo Bonnett for 3, Matt Stokeld caught in the slips for a duck, Derek Newman cutting straight to point, Gary McLintock soon following, as did portly Italian opener Bray as soon as he'd reached his 50. Jovial seaman, JJ Walker came in to steady the ship with the score at 88-5 after 25 overs, but soon got into his stride hitting a rapid 65 as the Mawnan support bowlers were made to toil. After JJ's demise, Colin Lee joined Cif Carvelly and the South African tore the attack apart. Tied down early, he gradually found his form, smashing ten 4,s and six huge 6's in his 84 ball blitz. 13 overs was all it took for the pair to amass an unbroken 7th wicket partnership of 119, Cif reaching his ton by taking 24 from the final over, but protecting his average by defending the last delivery!

In reply Mawnan needed quick runs. Dangerman Darren Griffiths was frustrated by the defensive field set for him and played an ugly shot off Stokeld to depart, and with it Mawnan's chances, for just 18, 'The Duke' showing good early season form with the ball. Able support came from all angles, Carvelly bagging 2 wickets to complete a fine day, Robbie 'Tunes' Hoare marking his comeback with 2 wickets, and Boo lapped up the tail with a couple of victims. A fine start to the season with both 1st and 2nd teams picking up maximum points in their opening fixtures, and there'll be dancing in the streets if Port can maintain this form over the coming weekend!
