In what proved to be Port's last league game of the season, Bank Holiday Monday saw Mawnan as the visitors, the team who had been their nearest rivals all season, and this was a chance for 'The Roasters' to show the title was fully deserved by beating their biggest rivals and completing the double. Penetration into the top of the Mawnan order was vital, Darren Griffiths with over 1100 runs to his name this season had already failed in the home fixture, and Port were determined not to let him get a start, as the field and the bowling was set up to frustrate him. It worked a treat - on a seamers delight Griffiths couldn't get Adam Young away, the only strokes of note being a wayward edge and mis-timed pull before he drove a half volley for 6. Young was not to be outdone, dishing out the Australian verbals - all 8 stone of him striking fear into the near 20 stone batsmen! Oz was to be the winner though, talking Griffiths out as the batsmen failed to settle, walking all around a slower ball and hearing the death rattle - 28 for 1 in the 9th over. Fielding again appeared to be a problem as a succession of chances went begging - JJ Walker missing a chance in the gully off the pacy Cif Carvelly, "Nkosi Sikelel'I Africa" was muttered by the usually chatty Protea! Andy 'Boo Boo' Bonnett spilled one at slip before Carvelly himself shouted (no mis-print!) for a chipped return, but he too spilled it! Finally his pace was too much for Carlyon, Pastafarian keeper Bray snaffling the chance, "Die Stem van Suid Afrika" warbled the Afrikaan destroyer! Mason was next to go, chipping Young to 'Champagne' Paddy Gardner at midwicket, before the Southern hemisphere stars made way for the 'northerners'. Ambrose and Graham Griffiths started to put together a decent partnership, but when it had reached 44 and the score 82 Parish yorked the 6ft 6 inch Griffiths and the collapse began. Irish cider supper, Walker came charging in, and Ambrose who'd ridden his luck for some time, chased a wide one, Bray at full stretch making a difficult chance look easy. Crouch was next to go, Parish attempting a yorker but somehow hitting the top of leg stump on the full - looked untidy but a change of luck after all the dropped chances was gratefully accepted! Walker then had Duckham caught behind by the olive muncher, Bray - his 20th catch of the year before Rob Airey's attempted pull was called for by the keeper as it looped up, only for Boo Boo to nip in and pouch the chance, 99-8. Walker then finished the innings off, firstly having Davis trapped in front, then taking a stunning catch in the gully to take his 9th catch of the season and Parish's 40th wicket as the innings was wrapped up in the 34th over, a great effort considering this side had topped 350 on the Saturday!

In reply Mawnan went with pace - Graham Griffiths pounding Bonnett and Bray with his balls hitting hard, but both batsmen took all he could give. Young Matt Symons was erratic, 9 wides coming from his first over before in his second he got one to hold its line, bowling Bray for 10. JJ joined Boo but was bowled by Graham Griffiths for just 2, bringing in Cif Carvelly, hitting Darren Griffiths for a 6 and a 4 before trying too hard, cutting straight to point, leaving Port in some trouble at 49-3. Paddy Gardner played a great supporting innings, his 13 being worth far more on such a lively track, he and Boo took the score to within reach before he was caught flicking his wrists with the score on 92. Adam Young joined Boo and the pair saw out the last few runs without any further scares, stretching the winning margin at the top of Division 4 to a massive 59 points as Port look forward to a hard fought county final next week, but as they say, "emissio vescor appario milit" and in this form, who would argue with that?!
