After a heavy night out in Penzance the previous evening, followed by a nightcap for a couple of players in T's on the way back, the 1st XI managed to shake off their hangovers and bag another 20 points. It was far from plain sailing at first as with Matt Stokeld missing, Cif Carvelly opened the bowling with Adam Young, but the previous nights mead was still kicking in as the unusually quiet South African was taken on by Mitchell in particular in his opening spell. Stithians raced to 35 in just 6 overs before Young had Lunn caught by Paddy Gardner in the gully for 5, the scruffy ex student bagging his usual weekly catch! Carvelly bowled Snell for a duck, but was expensive, his first 6 overs costing 51, Young's first 6 just 4! Hmmm....which one was tucked up early last night, and which one was leading his team-mates astray in the big city?! The rusty haired Australian finally removed Mitchell, 'Diamond legs' Richards taking a great catch in the slips. A double bowling change brought early success - Kebab Richards struggled with his short length but JJ 'Slugger' Walker was still pumped up from his early morning antics as he had Hamilton well caught behind by tubby tiramasu chomper, Dean Bray, followed next ball by bowling Grovner. Bray turned from hero to villain with the hat-trick ball looping off the bat, via pad but the greasy Italians paws were unable to snaffle the chance, double chicken in the rough still laying heavy! Walker continued with his spell, but unlike the previous evening, failed to land the knockout punch. With Carvelly re-introduced, his length now under control, pressure was maintained but skipper Mike Rodwell was protecting his tail as the wickets and runs dried up. With Boo Boo Bonnett and (non-playing) captain Darren Parish introduced everything came to a swift end with a flurry of late wickets, Run outs from Derek 'Nostalgia' Newman and 'Wristy' Francis coupled with Rodwell junior fisting one behind off Parish and Newman taking a good catch at cover point off Bonnett ensured maximum bowling bonus points. With the sun now gone, and dark clouds gathering, the climax needed to be reached quickly. Bray and Bonnett set about the task, slipping into any gaps, taking singles and keeping the board ticking. With the score on 57 in the 14th over, fat Peter Kay lookalike Bray edged Rodwell to fly slip, departing for 27 from 43 balls. Newman joined Bonnett but he too was tempted by a looping ball, caught at point for 13. JJ Walker came out fighting, realising that the drops of rain were getting heavier and victory could yet be snatched away. Thumping the ball to the boundary at every opportunity, 'Southpaw' Walker smacked 9 fours and punched a six in his 35 ball innings, refusing to surrender to the weather. Boo Boo increased his tempo - 5 fours and 2 sixes in his 66 ball knock as the pair whacked 74 from just 57 balls, beating the rain by just minutes and securing 20 points and keeping the title dream well and truly alive.
