Report

The Roasters certainly know how to make things hard for themselves, but victory was assured although the weather tried hard to have its say in a low scoring, yet eventful contest. After the predictable loss of the toss Port were asked to bat on a soaking wet patch some were calling a 'wicket'! Struggling with the early awkward conditions where bounce was 'occasional' at best, Dean Bray was first to go, playing around a straight one, the normally damp loving Italian was cursing as he trudged back for just 6. Andy Bonnett was next to go for 9, with Twiggy Thomas departing for a 16 ball single with the score 18-3 in the 14th over, dark clouds moved over the ground as well as the away dressing room! JJ 'Potato' Walker joined Derek Newman and the pair decided to take the attack to Gulval. 64 runs were added in just 9 overs before Newman was fingered by his own umpire, LBW for 28 from just 22 balls. Walker's knock was even more impressive, just 32 balls but 49 runs, including 2 successive huge 6's before holing out, trying to repeat the dose.  After debut starlet, Kevin Oliver's brief stay, 'white hoodie' loving Cif Carvelly smacked a quickfire 23, including a huge straight driven 6 with his shiny new bat! He too had caught the Walker curse, getting caught the next ball, leaving Port in trouble on 123-7. 'Slippers' Parish joined in form Aussie, Adam Young as the pair took the score to 166 before Parish's 17 ball stay ended, caught at long on.  This signalled the end as Al John got a first baller, shuffling furiously with his middle wicket, Kebab Richards caught, also for a duck, Steve Trathen delivering the stunning blow. Job done, or so Gulval thought, but the Roasters don't lie down, Carvelly and Young bowling great opening spells, Cif bowling Gendall with the score on 11. The score slowly edged along as the hosts made hard work of the freshly dampened pitch, not Bray's fault, but that of a half hour shower at tea! A change of bowling did the trick, with 'luck of the Irish', Oirishman, JJ Walker knowing exactly what the big idea was as Cook was tied down by the Gaelic Prince, running himself out for 9.Eddy then well held by Young after Newman, placed at long on for just the shot, had dropped him, 'Tino' John also dropping the same player!  With the score now moved on to 58-3 Tino took his first wicket for the club, Parish taking the catch (no misprint!). Walker then took over, having Trathen caught superbly by Newman, diving forward at long on to take the catch, then Butler and Shane Eddy both bowled for ducks.  With Tino tiring, Carvelly returned and his pace cranked up a couple of gears in this match he really found his form, uprooting Kerby's off stump and 70-8 the score. Lawrence was trapped LBW by Walker, but the ball pitched well outside leg stump and the Irishman stifled his appeal, but it was too late as the umpires finger was up! Cue language

not suitable for a family paper as the batmen directed a torrent of abuse towards his own umpire, but with the score 75-9 was it really worth it? Carvelly then wrapped the win up hitting the sticks once more to give his side a convincing victory and 19 points.
