Hayle came to visit a much depleted Porthleven side but in true roasters fashion a gritty contest would ensue. Port were missing skipper Parish and opener Bonnett who had jetted off to London for the new season of Swan Lake. Two other regulars were missing which brought a few of the seconds into the fray. Stand in skipper Aussie "Frodo Bagobones" kept the long standing tradition of losing the toss going and was put into bat. New opening partnership of Derek Newman and Kevin Oliver struggled against Hayle's tight opening, Oliver succumbing for 9 as he heard the death rattle. In came ‘Twiggy’ Thomas and the new skipper's worries disappeared as they fought hard to take the score to 83-1 off 20 overs. Just as Newman looked comfortable he decided to go for a walk to Breage and was stumped for 28. JJ Walker came in and a quick fire 26 off 17 pushed the run rate up. Port's batsmen continued to make starts only to give their wickets away, Twiggy out caught for 42. This brought South African Cif and Aus Young together who have enjoyed a good partnership this year, despite the formers anguish at the World Cup this year. Despite this, Aus showing no sympathy called a single to his southern hemisphere counterpart, who was left stranded in the bowlers crease for 14. Aus feeling a slight pang of guilt(especially after words from in form umpire JJ Walker) knew Combellack and himself needed a good stand with the score 129 and 30 overs gone. A few fours and some uncharacteristic defending from Combellack took the score to 150 before Combellack played on. Paul Harding and Kevin Richards came and went adding 5 to the board. Aus was next out for 28 trying to add runs in the final overs. Paul "Wristy" Francis came in to lend Cosy a hand as the pair came together to put on an invaluable 7 runs. This left Port all out for 177 and rueing what could have been.

With what was thought to be a weaker bowling attack Port took to the field. A miserly opening few overs by Carvelly and Aus put pressure on the batsmen as they ran a suicide single to mid-off, Kev Oliver firing the ball into the toes of stand in keeper Twiggy (who proved he could bend over and take it as well as Dean Bray), the bails were whipped off and Hayle 8 for 1. Out came B. Trestrail and a couple of glorious cover drives meant nothing as Aus removed his off stump for 9. Treloar joined N. Trestrail and a steady partnership of 49 started to worry Port before Kebab was rewarded in his fifth over as Harding caught a mis-timed off drive. The skipper was forced to turn to Phil Harding who he was told could roll his arm over, roll his arm over he could and with added swing. JJ Walker, at the other end, as usual very tight. This led to another suicide run as Del Newman skipped in from mid off and threw the stumps down, only to be told he was too fast for the umpire to see, summing up the nostalgic Porthlevener. Walker ripped through Wiseman the next over. A few more "uneventful" overs as not much was said by either side. The crowd were enjoying Harding's spell and wondering where he has been. The game hung in the balance and as usual when in need call on the Irish Maestro. All those years back home with his 14 brothers catching potatoes from the potato gun paid off as he took the catch of the season off his own bowling (you heard it here first) to dismiss N. Trestrail for 51. This was the turning point and although Hayle kept chipping away Port had an answer. Only needing 28 of the last 8 overs with 4 wickets Carvelly's exceptional last spell and Harding and Young's tight bowling finished off Hayle with 8 runs to get. An excellent win for the roasters cementing 2nd spot on the ladder. Stand in skipper Aus enjoying his day out but glad to hand the reins back to Parish as we chase the top spot.
