Porthleven's top order batsmen nearly got
their awful fielders off the hook, but in the end justice was done as
of a game the Roasters must be
asking how they lost. Asked to bat first, the hosts started nervously,
struggled with the length of Carvelly and Young, as the Southern hemisphere
pair relentlessly banged away at each end. Skipper Jamie Stevens and Alex
Western rode their luck, spooning chances into gaps as they were frustrated by
tight opening provided by Port's openers. Fiery Gaelic Prince, JJ Walker came
into the attack with 'Slippers' Parish at the other end. On the last ball of
Parish's first over Western was dropped by pint sized Kevin Oliver with the
score on 34, he then went on to make 89 so quite a costly one!
Another of the 7 dropped
catches went down off the last ball of Parish's next over - the trend was set
for the day! With the score on 57 Stevens sliced Parish to deep cover, Twiggy
Thomas taking a composed catch. Goldsworthy was then run out superbly by a
direct hit from JJ with the score on 97, but that was the only
penetration made for some time as chances
were continually spilled.
chance in the deep and then with
that probably still on his mind, dropped a simple chance off the Australian bag
of bones, Young. Nigel
Moyle couldn't resist the
Aussie's length, two successive maximums before a trademark slower one foxed
him, bowled for 37. Port badly needed a spinner on this surface, Kebab Richards
house hunting, so with him cottaging, it was left to
'KO' Oliver to turn his arm. He found some turn, but usually on the second
bounce! By the last ball he was into his stride, but extra nets for the young
pup should put him right! From 171-2 the innings petered out, as Young and
Carvelly came back and bowled great spells, Derek Newman winding back his
pocket watch to take a great catch deep at long on, before Carvelly really
motored
in, fired up like one of the
special barbeques he used to have back home, no-one was to cross him as he
bowled Western, hit Evans with a

times with a catch at point, must've been one of
was caught by Parish on the
gully, a simple chance even those glass hands couldn't put down! With 191 to
chase Italian 'Gattuso' Bray and Boo Boo Bonnett made a steady start, finding the gaps to
repeatedly penetrate the ring as the score moved to 39 nefore
Boo was caught for 20. Twiggy Thomas is
running into form at the
moment, no doubt excited by the return of Big Brother this week, the ex
housemate joined vice skipper Bray before
the keeper was caught for 23,
prompting an un-necessary send off from the bowler as a mass of players and
handbags looked to sour a prevously
good natured game. With normal service resumed, Newman joined
Thomas, but he had to take a back seat as Twiggy really hit top form, smashing
seven 4's and two 6's before the umpire decided he was looking too good and
gave him out 'caught' behind! From 115-2 the innings lost its momentum, Newman
caught behind for 7 and JJ gone for 9 before Kev Oliver
helped Carvelly take the score to 147-5 before he was bowled. Oz Young was
bowled by spinner Duncan

Parish, eyes lighting up as he was greeted by close fielders, tried to clear
the field and the ropes. Wrong shot. Wrong
time. Have a word with yourself!
Jamie 'Squirrel' Slater was next to go, hit outside the line of off stump, but
it didn't stop the umpire raising his finger as 3 wickets fell with the score
on 161. Carvelly tried to lead the side home, but it was not to be. Extra
catching practice this week especially as
it's never been that difficult to
catch something in
