On a roasting Bank Holiday afternoon in Truro for once the skipper won the toss and elected to have first use of what looked a hard and dry pitch. As the early overs progressed it turned out it was dry! Italian marvel, The Bray Corporation was first to trundle back to the hutch, caught in the gully for 8. Twiggy Thomas was next to follow, he too spooning to the same fielder for just 5 before the potato crunching shamrock sniffer 'Too many J's' JJ Walker strode to the crease. Everyone's favourite Irishman (other Irishmen are available) showed great restraint (for about an over and a half) but soon things got the better of the little fella! 'Der's more to batting dan dis' he was heard to cry as he lofted a drive to mid on, and it was back to count his spud collection. Next to try his luck was Cif Carvelly, the Kwakhangela smasher's had a few starts this year, but no huge score. Today he put that right. Looking nervous early doors, he was dropped at mid on, but this seemed to galvanise him and he made Truro pay for their mistake, time and time again straight driving each bowler back over their heads for boundaries. For some reason mid on and mid off were kept in close as time and time again the ball was sent over their heads and the Seeth Efrikaaaaans score rose. From 31-3 the score was taken past 100 as Boo Boo Bonnett managed to reign in his usual expansive style, dropping anchor as Carvelly went wild! The pair added 90 for the 4th wicket before Boo's 66 ball knock ended for 18. 'Up the' Gary McLintock joined Cif and added a rapid 48 before Mac was somehow out! Nobody's quite sure if he was bowled, caught or stumped but it signalled the return of the Mac! Run machine Kevin Oliver's running into form, which is handy for those winter months! He helped Cif secure his ton before the rowdy Protea succumbed, bowled for 118 118! Little Kevin was next to go,

bowled for an entertaining 23 as the push for quick runs took it's toll. Cozy Powell went for a single, then finally Parish for 12, leaving cake baking Imp, Shandy Surtees on 13 not out as the innings closed at 237.

Truro never really tried to chase the total, survival the key! Carvelly was rested from opening duties, and with Adam Young on gardening duties, the unfamiliar opening duo of Walker and Surtees set about the Truro batsmen. Walker, as usual giving nothing away toiled as Shandy skipped merrily to the crease, but after just 3 overs the shouts of 'Bambi' became too much! Off he went for a rest, and man of the moment Carvelly joined the attack. In just his second over the change worked, Lewis bowled for 13 with the total 19. No further alarms through to the start of the 17th over, Parish coming on, first ball straight to Kev Oliver at point, 29-2. Gray was giving little away and slowly compiling a score, and it wasn't until the 23rd over before he chipped Parish to Mac at cover, 61-3. After Gray had started to go after Carvelly's short balls it was time to bring Shandy back, and in his second over he trapped Gray in front and finally an LBW decision was given! Walker came back on and 3 overs later Heayn played all round a full toss and was sent on his way. Skipper Chris Chaplin next in, a man a couple of hours earlier had exchanged a 'difference of opinion' with umpire Twiggy Thomas on the LBW law was ironically hit on the protective leg guards and fingered by his own umpire first ball! From 104-6 Truro took the score along to 127 before Carvelly, in his second spell, bowled Rust for 32. Shandy managed to gain Port's fourth LBW decision of the game at the end, but try hard as they did, the bowlers couldn't finish Truro off, but it was still a great performance in the field from just 10 men.

The Roasters last game is at home this Saturday, promotion still in the balance depending on other results. Watch this space viewers!
