Report
What’s that coming over the hill? Is it a Roaster? Yes it is, and the
2007 season got underway in fine style as Port crushed
After a shaky start, losing Boo Boo Bonnet for
6 and Twiggy Thomas for a duck on his debut, JJ Walker joined Italian opener
Wee Wee Bray taking the score from 15-2 to 86,
enjoying plenty of jovial ‘banter’ with the opposition before hitting two
successive maximums then fingering one behind for 47 from just 25 balls. Bray
was next to go for 41, a fine start for the new vice skipper, before he was
followed by the other debutant, Al John back in the hutch for a duck, leaving
Port on the ropes at 118-5, but in difficult times call for an Australian! Port
have to put up with his Ashes chat but at least Adam Young had brought some
form to the crease, keeping ‘chattering’ Cif Carvelly company as the South
African blazed 45 impressive runs. Gary McLintock
joined Young, leaving the Australian to bang away impressively as he doggedly
watched from close range. When he fell ‘Oz’ was joined by ‘
In reply Mount Ambrose made a steady start, but struggled with the
Southern hemisphere attack of Young and Carvelly, Young’s first 4 overs being
maidens, before in the 13th over Johnson’s patience finally
gave way, lofting to Carvelly at mid off with the score on 43. The introduction
of fiery Irish warrior JJ Walker had a dramatic effect as the Gaelic potato
chucker took 4 wickets in his first 6 overs, conceding just 3 runs as the
opposition had as much trouble replying to his bowling as his sledging! Tempers
seemed to rise as few decisions were given in Ports direction, Mount apparently
upset with the ‘Multi-National Roasting XI’ placed before them! ‘Tino’ John did little to help their mood, bowling a great
spell on his debut, denied a catch behind by the umpires eyesight! Carvelly and
Young returned to the attack and from 114-5 the Mount collapsed! As usual Young
lapped up the tail, ‘Tino’ taking the final catch as
20 points were secured to back up the 2nds who also defeated
