After the useless tosser yet again lost the coin flip it was over to Bray
and Bonnett to face the early fire as St Just pressed hard for early penetration.
It came with 33 on the board when 'Dettori' Bray showed his love of spooning,
caught for 9. Derek Newman was next to go hitting a glorious straight drive,
reminiscent of his Redruth days, before next ball a half hearted LBW appeal
awoke the umpire who decided enough was enough, ending his stay for just 8.
Boo Boo was next to go, for a patient 29, his end coming prematurely just
as he looked to be hitting top form. JJ 'Spud-u-like' Walker hit a rapid 31,
even penetrating a ladies back door with an impressive pull shot, the ball
disappearing over the fence, followed by the tinkle of smashing glass! 'KO'
Oliver joined Cif Carvelly, but his unlucky run was to continue as he was
given out LBW, the bruise on his chest should've cleared up in time for the
next match!
Not 3 Shredded Wheats, but 3 special K's for the fiery South African, Carvelly
as he gradually moved his innings into top gear, his new 'Smasher' bat (available
from the club shop, other items are available!) pinging the ball to all parts
as he brought up yet another 50. Unfortunately, the lower order failed to
support him and once he'd gone it was left to 'Squirrel' Slater and Wristy
Francis to add a useful 17 for the last wicket and give their bowlers something
to play with.
St Just were well organised in the field, somewhat arrogant at times, but
they seemed to go very quiet when Oz Young and Carvelly were coming at them
hard. Oz struck first, removing both openers, one LBW, the other caught behind
by Bray, before the introduction of Walker for Young brought instant rewards,
Newman catching Jose for 4. Carvelly, bowling with the wind, was eventually
rested, 'Les' Dawson stepping up from the 2nds bowling Harvey with his first
ball in a Roasters shirt.
Walker continued his amazing early season form, trapping Davies in front for
6, the umpire at least proving he was consistant! JJ then had Rowe caught
at mid off by Carvelly for a dangerous 31. This brought in what can only be
described as 'Captain Caveman'! Obviously toiletries and grooming products
have yet to reach Tumbleweed town, although hair farming is alive and kicking!
Duelling banjos aside for now as battle resumed, but it was Walker again on
top, taking a return catch to dispose of the 'urchin' for just 9, Young also
sending him on his way as the pair exchanged a few words!
JJ completed his 5-for, removing Harvey LBW without scoring before the re-introduction
of Carvelly brought a bizarre dismissal. Semmens, batting out of his crease,
played and missed at a swift delivery, Bray having the mind of an alert (Italian)
fox to roll the ball back, breaking the stumps as the batsman was still wondering
why he didn't see the ball go past the first time!
With St Just now 99-9 it was game over, and despite a cameo 20 from Stevens
it was 'Word Up' when Boo's paws snaffled a catch at mid on, giving Port a
vital victory in their quest for yet more title glory!
