With a
minutes silence impeccably observed in memory of Del Newman, Port got back to
winning ways in a manner the great man would've
approved of. A roasting day and another lost toss meant Port
were in the field straight away, but a fine performance by all typified the
spirit shown through the club over the past couple of weeks. Everyone's favourite
South African, Cif 'FW' Carvelly had Neil-Hall caught by JJ with just 2 runs on
the board, then bowled Bunt for just 5 and Mann for 17
to leave the visitors in big trouble, during a typically fiery opening spell. Leggy
Australian Adam Young gave able support from the other end, but as runs and
wickets dried up in the heat, it was time for a change and the introduction of
JJ Walker and Darren Parish. Old timers don't get out much these days, but this
pair creaked their aged bones towards the wicket but
couldn't get the breakthrough, although the Hawkes
had little attacking intention until after the halfway point. Venturing out of
their shells, Madeley and skipper Bryant began to
take a few risks, not so much with shot selection but running at every
opportunity. For a time this worked as they just tried to play the ball into
gaps and scamper singles, but the scoreboard was pretty much a spectator too
for some time! Eventually something had to give, and in the heat it was
probably 'Slippers' knees! An injection of pace was needed so Carvelly
returned, nicely rested and fired up they were unable to employ the same
tactics, but it was JJ who made the breakthrough with his 'Doosra',
bowling Madeley for 32, the next ball trapping
Dunstan in front LBW. D Bryant was next to go, JJ shattering his sticks. Young
was re-introduced after JJ had bowled his 12 overs straight through, and
Carvelly struck again before the end of his spell. Young then bowled Maloney,
but Bryant and Maltwood put on a useful 9th wicket
partnership before taking the innings to the last ball when Parish took a
return catch to leave 9 wickets down but only 136 required. Over to the batsmen now, and as always seems
the case, the smaller targets are the hardest ones to get! Italian 'Buffon' Bray chipped a catch to mid off to fall without
troubling the scorers, Boo Boo Bonnett was joined by
Twiggy Thomas, who smashed 14 runs from the first over he received from Moloney as the pair began to repair the early damage before
Boo unluckily played on for 13. Unluckily for the Hawkes
though was Twiggy's form, driving
beautifully as the board began to race, JJ tried to join the
party, a cameo 18 before he tried one too many and was caught, bringing a
middle order wobble as Carvelly was caught behind for 1 and
Combellack bowled for a duck. Duck seemed suddenly quite apt,
as that's what most people were doing as Twiggy went about smasing
five 6's and eight 4's, a perfectly timed response just when the pressure was
on. Adam Young gave great support as the pair kept their nerve during the end
of the chase. Eventually Twiggy decided
the Hawke's spinner looked easy enough, put him in the field twice and took 20
off his over to leave Oz Young to crash the winning runs. A
great result and a great performance. Just what the club needed. Legs
weary, the players headed into town, and more importantly T's as a sea of
yellow Roasters drank a toast to
