Report
It wasn't only the starfish in the
Perranporth rockpools that were twitching as this
contest entered its 96th over. Perranporth eventually snatching a tight victory
but Port had many chances to seal victory as this contest swung both ways
before its dramatic climax.
Winning (yes, really!) the toss 'Slippers'
Parish decided to give his batsmen first use of what appeared a batsmen friendly
wicket - and so it proved to be as the total lack of pace meant at times the
batsmen had too much time over their strokes, failing to take full advantage of
the bowler's length.
Dean
Bray was first to go, spooning in the covers for a duck. Wee Wee always scores, but not today! Next to follow was Andy
Bonnett, Boo's patience finally evaporating as Rob Miller's turning ball
flicked his middle wicket.
Twiggy Thomas was finding things far easier,
hitting 7 boundaries as he began to find his form, the only problem being, once
he found it he decided to give it back, caught and bowled for 33. This brought
in Derek 'Nostalgia' Newman, who remembers powdered eggs and policeman on
bicycles.....and Pacers! He starting patiently but soon got into the groove, banging
away time and time again, ably assisted by 'Laughing Boy' Cif Carvelly, as the Seeth Efricaaan joined him in a
91 run partnership that took just 16 overs before Newman hit 2 glorious
boundaries, then bowled for a run a ball 64 going for the next!

Perranporths reply was not without early alarm, Young
surprisingly choosing to open up the hill, before words from 'keeper Bray
convinced him to change ends, Boo Boo used as the
'switcher', his first ball everyone's friend, the 'double bouncer' before 2
close run out chances were missed and normal service resumed!
Carvelly made the breakthrough, Twiggy snaring
the catch at point, closely followed by Parish taking one at midwicket, with skipper
Matt Blackman run out for 22, the score 58-3 after 18. Aussie Chad Ruddy
managed to chip the ball in the air between most fielders early in his innings,
before proving he could bat, making 35 before JJ Walker 'thought' him out,
taking the simplest of return catches from a slower ball.
The
Roasters were now well on top, Walker bowling superbly, including 4 consecutive
maidens with 2 further wickets - McCall well held at mid on by 'Sicknote' Kev Pawley, then
trapping Miller LBW for a duck. At
The
next ball penetrated the Porthleven ring and victory escaped! 20 runs short
with the bat, but losing a bowler at 10.00 that morning had left the Roasters
short of firepower. The better side won on the day, but only because they were
allowed to be!
