Nobody likes to go a week without any action, but the Roasters have gone 2 weeks so frustration was building! Despite the score the bowlers made a good start, both Cif Carvelly returning from Grand Prix duty and Nigel 'Henman' Dunstan back from his Wimbledon exploits, worked hard to penetrate the Hayle opening pair, but it was not to be as Neil Trestrail and Graham Wiseman gave little away in the opening exchanges.  Yet again Port lost Adam Young on the Saturday morning, and with missing seaman JJ Walker, it was left to 2nd XI captain Ken Boon to rush back from Bristol on the morning of the contest to plug the gap. He did a great job, on a slow and unresponsive pitch the Hayle batsmen found him difficult to handle, Wiseman eventually holing out to Carvelly with the score on 57 in the 20th over.  Harvey Treloar came to the crease, an ex team-mate of skipper Parish from their youthful days playing for Leedstown under 14s (5 or 6 seasons ago!), but Parish failed to remove him, 1st and 2nd team skippers ably banging away at both ends, but although runs were hard to come by, wickets were lacking as well!  The reintroduction of 'Tiger' Tim Henman and Cif Carvelly increased the action - but it was runs in the first instance as the two set batsmen worked the ball around the large outfield and it was not until the 42nd over with the score on 170 that Carvelly put in a real effort ball, the extra bounce fooling Treloar as he fingered to Bray's waiting paws!  Dunstan then bowled Wiseman Snr with the score on 201, but we were now in the 45th over. He also then removed centurion Trestrail, ending a previously chanceless innings, bowling him for 117. By this time the damage had been done, but Port had never given up in the field, only an injury to Boo Boo Bonnett marring the fielding display as the bowlers all worked tirelessly for the cause.

223 didn't appear a huge target, but when Bonnett edged behind first ball, and Italian Bray chipped a catch in the second over, 0-2 was not the best start. This became 12-3 when Carvelly was again adjudged LBW, his early ball shuffles letting him down again, single figures or a big score the norm for the outspoken South African! Luckily it was return of the Mac, Gary McLintock returning from defending our shores, he and Twiggy Thomas shoring up the innings but the ball appeared much softer now, the bounce much lower, and when it gets soft it's harder to penetrate the field, and the rate struggled. With these two at the crease the Roasters had a chance, but when seeming well set Twig was bowled for 28 with the score 41-4. 'Ken' Boon joined Mac but when looking in good touch lofted spinner Clive Polkinhorne high to long off, 51-5. Young pup, Kevin 'Jamie' Oliver came to the crease, in need of a few runs. He provided great support to senior pro McLintock, gradually finding some strokes of his own as the pair began to put some pressure back on Hayle. The pair added 45 for the 6th wicket before Oliver was tempted out of his ground, the keeper whipping off his bails for a useful 20. It was Henmania as Dunstan strode purposefully to the wicket with a skip in his stride, but alas he was maybe a little too eager, giving Mac yet more grey hairs as he called for a quick single, the cobwebs not yet blown away as he just failed to make his ground. Dunstan was next to go, holing out in the deep in a vain attemp to push the score on, but now it was 118-8 and time was running out. Parish and Jamie 'Squirrel' Slater briefly looked like they may begin a partnership of worth, but with Slater tempted into a big swipe, the death rattle soon followed.  All that remained was for 'Wristy' Francis to walk in, take guard, then walk back again, his leg stump at a slightly jaunty angle! 130 all out, and the Roasters in need of some batsmen! Transfer forms are available at the ground for any players interested! Tuesday nights practice session could, and should see a queue of players with their pads on, desperate to halt the batting slump.
