No excuses, just not good enough. The report could and maybe should
end there, but the press have space to fill and good or bad, the hacks
demand their sporting insight!
Winning the toss on a perfect wicket batting was the only option,
but smartly dressed opener, Ronnie 'Michael' Williams drove beautifully
straight to mid off with just 4 runs on the board. DCI 'Tito'Higgs
was next, like finding a smooth criminal, the exact shot accounting
for the pint sized PC for just a 'Jackson', 'Jermaine' Bartlett making
the (moon)walk back with the score on 26, more catching practice.
JJ Walker was next to go, after trying to beat it around the park
he too was caught for 16 with the score on 32, 10 runs later the 5th
wicket, Colin 'Doyle' Lee bowled by Rule for a duck.
Adam Young hadn't played the previous week, but responding to the
'I want you back' call, the Australian joined 'Run Machine' Kevin
Oliver and the pair finally showed the pitch had no demons, driving
through the covers and straight, finding the boundaries as they put
on 58 in 15 overs before Young was caught for 20. 5 runs later 'Crispy'
Duck could resist Clive'Marlon' Polkinghorne's balls any longer, swinging
hard, stumps clattered!
Parish joined Oliver but KO's fine innings was ended for 43, 110-8.
'Griff' Griffith fell for 4 after he and Parish had chipped in 16,
but John 'Sweeney' Barber could remember the time he opened for the
firsts, but didn't get to face a ball after his captain was yorked
with 15 overs remaining.
Porthleven's task was black or white, 10 wickets to win, Hayle's quest
to not stop until they get enough. Oz Young making the perfect start,
bowling Wiseman with just 6 on the board. Neil Trestrail joined Stuckey,
the pair struggling early against Young and Duck, but whereas every
ball Port drove found a fielder, Hayle seemed to be able to find the
gaps and although their progress in the first 20 overs was slow, they
had 9 wickets in hand, and it was as easy as ABC as the early high
standard of fielding suddenly went out of the window, so inept at
times you could scream.
Five other bowlers were tried, but none had the penetration of the
openers, but if you can't beat it at least try it, but the luck didn't
come and despite Young finally getting some reward, his slower ball
chipped by Trestrail to Oliver for 38, 112-2 was the score and it
was too little, too late as Hayle ensured it was no thriller, but
an easy and well deserved victory, Stuckey and Richard 'Colin' Love
seeing the target reached with nearly 16 overs to spare.
