After last weeks "apparent" wet pitch at Penzance it was nice to get back on to the pitch to play. Down to 10 men due to lots of other commitments, Vice Capt Brad Bury won the toss and elected to bat on a lovely sunny day against visitors Mount Ambrose. A new opening partnership was born today as Tim Oliver made his debut alongside waif Ronnie Williams. The pair saw off the new ball (so they claimed), however, in the 6th over, Williams played a long hop on to his own stumps - 15-1. Bonnett joined Oliver at the crease and steadied the ship with some thoughtful batting. Oliver's innings lasted until the 15th over when he flashed at a wide one and was well caught in the slips, 28-2. JJ Walker joined Boo and the pair started scoring freely with boundaries a plenty - Boo scoring a rare six! Walker was next to go for 33 with 77 on the board, Kev Oliver then showed his dad how to bat at The Bottoms, scoring a well deserved 42 before being caught out. The score had been pushed up to 134 at this stage and this was where Mount started to fight back and contain Port as they looked to increase the run rate. The tail failed to really wag, but kept the Mount attack out as they managed to bat out the 48 overs, 173-9 was the final total.
So Port took to the field with only 10, but in a very determined fashion. It was two of Port's "Left Armers Union" who opened, and Walker and Bury started well with some really tight bowling, and by the 10th over had the visitors 7-4 with two wickets apiece. Mark Pollard came in to the attack and at the half way point, Mount had only managed to score 45 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Gary Furneaux joined the attack (thank you Mrs F) and kept the pressure on, taking a fine Caught and Bowled - Disco shoes really were dancing now!! Tim Oliver was brought on to replace Disco and took a wicket in his 3rd over, and at this stage the visitors were 114-8 in the 38th over, a tense finish was being set up by Mount batsman J Tresidder. As the overs ticked by, the score moved on and took Mount to within reach of an upset. With 6 overs left, 44 runs were required with two wickets still in the hutch - nails were starting to be trimmed in Critic's Corner! However, Skipper Bury brought himself back in to the mix, and brought proceedings to an end with the help of keeper Williams - who effected his second class stumping of the innings! Tresidder was stranded on a well played 65 Not Out and a win was in the bag for Port, by the slender margin of 19 runs - but a welcome 19 points were bagged!!
Port's 2nd XI were beaten away at Rosudgeon by 7 wickets. Scoring 132 All out in their innings, 13 year old Dan Walker starred with the bat, scoring 40 runs. Unfortunately Port's bowlers were having an off day and the home side passed the total for the loss of only 3 wickets in the 28th over.
Next week, the 1st XI are away to promotion chasing Crofty and the 2nd XI host bottom side Mount Ambrose 2nd XI.
